Youth wrestling: South Side successful against top programs
South Side Wrestling Club traveled to Wildwood (N.J.) for a three-day dual tournament to take on some of the nation’s elite teams.
Competing for the elementary team were Ryder Zychek, Eli Shea, Dawson McGrath, Dominick Spadaro, Ben Zuckerman, Justin Duhancik, Maurice Ellis and Jayson Diaz.
The elementary team finished with wins over top programs, Empire Wrestling Academy of Danbury and SEPA of Pennsylvania.
Empire was leading the locals, 25-10, when Dominick Spadaro sparked the come back with a 27-second pin at 81 pounds to pull South Side within nine points.
Ben Zuckerman scored six points for the team with a forfeit.
Justin Duhancik at 101 pounds won by fall to score another sx points for the club to make the score 32-31 going into the final match.
Losing 2-0 in the final seconds, Maurice Ellis at 111 pound, scored a takedown to tie the match 2-2. In overtime, Ellis secured the takedown and the match for South Side, 44-31.
South Side’s middle school team was led by Jacob Gonzalez, Antonio Madero, Warren Little, Tyler Smith, Aethan Munden, Lukas Cylwik and James Duhancik.
All contributed with wins to a successful weekend.
