The Trumbull United U11 Lightning girls soccer team played Ridgefield to 0-0 draw in the Southwest District championship game on Sunday, Nov. 13.
It was a fitting end to a great season, considering that Ridgefield handed the Lightning their only loss during regular season play.
The game was a defensive battle from beginning to end. Abigail McKinney (center-back), Keelyn Trubovich (left-back) and Finley O'Connell (right-back), with support from Isabella Callaway and Maya Marin, repeatedly frustrated the Ridgefield attack.
The Lightning had a couple of good scoring opportunities, with one strike from Isabella Marchelli hitting the post and another just missing wide left.
After posting a 7-1 mark, the Lightning met Westport in the district semifinals.
Regulation play was evenly matched, with both teams playing solid defense and mounting several promising attacks, but the game went to overtime knotted at 0-0.
Finally, in the first of two 10 minute overtime periods, Siena McGeachy made a great pass to Marchelli on a break and she knocked it in putting the Lightning up 1-0.
Amelia Tutek secured the win halfway through the second overtime with a brilliant run up the middle, increasing the Lightning lead to 2-0.
Tutek and Ella Marron split time at goal in both games, hold their opponents to zero goals scored. The Lightning are coached by Cipriano Jorge Pinto and managed by Jason Callaway.
