The Trumbull United Thunder U-9 girls soccer team started early on their spring season as they defeated Stamford, 5-2, at InSports.

The Thunder, which is moving up to the A Division for the spring, played their first opponent in the higher class level. They led early on a left-footed goal by Katie Marchand. Next, Abby Lee scored on a precise cross intended for Marchand that fooled the Stamford defense.

Lilly Seltenreich followed by finishing on a breakaway. The final two goals came on a Sophia Bennett long-range shot and Oliva Flores’ blast on a free kick.

The Thunder played strong defense in front of goalie Catalina Mozzo, who directed the action from the back. Defenders Danika Curtin, Joceylyn VanStone and Peyton Bashar formed a stingy backline.

Coaches Tyler Jorge and Kyri Marinos were left impressed; especially considering the girls were missing a lot of strong players. "The girls played fantastic with one sub," Jorge said. "These girls work so hard hard and it's nice all their hard work is paying off. I'm looking forward to the spring. This is a great group of girls that coach Kyri and I are expecting to have a fun and competitive season with."
