The Trumbull United Scorpions U11 boys soccer team won its quarterfinal match on Saturday against the Farmington A squad, 3-0, to stay alive in the CT Cup.
The Scorpions spent much of the first half in the opponent’s end. Good play by Dylan Moreira at the front defined the early minutes, but it was fine passing that allowed the Scorpions to break through onto the scoreboard.
Christian Moura scored in the 30th minute after a pass from Jack Carlos that he received from Lander Sotil. Moura’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar, then the right post, and bounced all the way to the inside left post before rolling in across the line.
The three players joined together again just four minutes later to make it 2-0. Carlos passed the ball to Moura on the right wing then Moura chipped it to Sotil, who one-touched it into the center right net.
Two minutes into the second half, the rain started to fall. Despite the cold and wet conditions, the Trumbull defense stayed strong. Strong winds and wet turf made passing more difficult, but it did not dissuade their unrelenting play.
It was a set piece that led to the Scorpions’ final goal in the 61st minute, a center pitch direct free kick from Owen Bull more than 35 yards away. The high-paced kick took a skip about four yards in front of the keeper, who got a hand on the bullish shot but could not stop it from passing by him into the left back net.
The Scorpions next play Westport in the semifinals.
