The Trumbull Babe Ruth 13 All-Star team opened the District 2 Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Fairfield at Kiwanis Field on Friday.

Zak Brace hit a pair of doubles, the first tying the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning and the second knocking in a run during Trumbull’s three-run rally in the sixth.

Jake Teixeira got the start and pitched the first five innings, striking out six batters and allowing three hits

Alex Chopskie pitched the final two frames, allowing only one baserunner and striking out one.

Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Billy Duffy doubled with one out and scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Luke Finnegan led off the third with a single for Fairfield, but was erased on a 4-6-3 double play that was started by Kyle Zielinski, and turned by Steven Iola to Brace at first base.

Luke Lemy had a two-out single in the second, and Brace and Ryan Vawter drew walks before Fairfield starter Ryan Dean got a roller to Devin Young at first to retire the side.

Trumbull tied the game in the fourth when Brace doubled up the gap in right-center with two out to score Teixeira, who had been hit by a pitch.

Teixeira stranded a runner on third base in the top of the fifth, and Trumbull strung together five straight hits with one out to take the lead in the sixth.

Ioli had a solid single to left, Evan Warner stayed back on the ball and drove it up the middle for a single, before Chopskie pulled the ball inside the first base bag to score Ioli.

Lamy dropped a single into no man’s land in shallow right field to plate the third run, and then Brace slugged a double to left-center this time to push the lead to 4-1.

In the second round of pool play on Sunday, June 29, Trumbull will play Norwalk at 11:30 a.m. Trumbull meets Wilton at 5:30 on Tuesday, July 1.

The top two teams will meet for the title on Wednesday, July 2, at 5:30. All games are Kiwanis Field in Fairfield.
