Softball: Trumbull High defeats top-seeded NFA
Trumbull High’s softball team defeated top-seeded Norwich Free Academy, 9-5 in eight innings, in the Class LL quarterfinals on Sunday.
Coach Jacqui Sheftz’ ninth-seeded Lady Eagles (19-5) will play fifth-seeded Stamford High (21-2) in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford.
“Our defense was unbelievable today,” Sheftz said. “Our outfield was phenomenal. Ally (Szabo) maintained her composure on the mound.
“When we finally started executing in the fifth, our offense just took off from there. It was a complete team effort today.
"I’m proud of the way our team stepped up and accepted the challenge of playing the number one ranked team in Class LL.”
Delilah DeStefano had an RBI single to begin the four-run eighth inning rally.
Lea Thompson hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning.
Julie Huzi slapped a pair of RBI doubles.
Alexa Adinolfi had two hits and scored a pair of runs.
Jordan Nute hit a two-run single in the second for NFA (21-3).
Shea Gendron knocked in two runs with a fifth-inning single.
Elizabeth Fleming struck out 12.
