Five Pisces' excel at USA Swimming Eastern Zone Short Course Championship
The Pisces closed out the 2018-19 Short Course Season with an impressive showing at the USA Swimming Eastern Zone Short Course Championship.
Representing Trumbull at the Webster Aquatic Center in Webster, N.Y. from April 3-6 at this year’s championship meet were Kristen Racicot (12), Liz Stoelzel (15), Rohit Gunda (15), Julia Nevins (16) and Liam Crecca (16).
In total, the squad had qualified for 16 championship events.
Coach Bill Strickland had his swimmers primed and ready and the Pisces finished 39th out of 144 of the best swim teams from Maine to Virginia. Trumbull was the fifth highest scoring team from the state.
Kristen Racicot qualified for seven and competed in six events at the Zones Championship.
Zones capped off an outstanding Short Course season that saw Racicot finish 12th overall in CT for 11-12 at the Age Group Championships. She took first place overall in the Yankee League 11-12 and set five Pisces team records for 500 Free, 100 Breaststroke, 50 Butterfly, 100 Butterfly and the 400 Individual Medley.
At Zones, Liz Stoelzel finished 5th in the 50 Free and 8th in 100 Backstroke to finish an amazing short course season, where as a sophomore she qualified for High School State Opens, made All-State Class M in 50 Free and 100 Backstroke and took first place at Yankee League finals in 100 Breaststroke and 50 Free. Stoelzel qualified for the 2019 Speedo Sectionals and set the Pisces team record for 50 Free with a time of 24.61.
For Rohit Gunda, this was an exciting finish to the short course season where he finished 12th in the 500 freestyle at FCIACS and Class LL state championships and 21st in the 200 freestyle in the Class LL Finals as a sophomore. He also finished 20th in the 1000 Free at the CT Senior State Championships. Gunda's season culminated with a 4th place finish in the 500 and 1000 Free at the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships, setting the Pisces’ team record in both events.
Julia Nevins had an outstanding finish to the Short Course season at the Eastern Zones Championship, finishing 5th in both the 200 Breaststroke and 100 Butterfly and 7th in 200 Butterfly. As a junior at THS in the 100 Butterfly, she finished 4th at FCIAC finals, 6th at Class LL and 20th at State Opens. Nevins also set the Pisces team record in the 100 Butterfly event.
At Eastern Zone Championships, Liam Crecca competed in two events finishing 2nd in the 50 Free and 4th in the 200 Breaststroke. This was the completion of an amazing season for Crecca, who qualified for the 2019 Speedo Sectionals as well as six CT Senior State Championship events. He set six Pisces’ team records in 50 & 100 Free, 100 & 200 Backstroke, 100 & 200 Breaststroke. As a sophomore at THS competing in the 50 Free, Crecca finished 5th at FCIAC and Class LL finals and then took 15th at the State Opens.
The Pisces take a short break before diving back into the pool at Hillcrest Middle School to kick off their Long Course season.
