Last season’s Connecticut Cup state soccer tournament champions, the Trumbull United U-11 Scorpions, have returned to the semifinals after defeating the NECONN U-11 boys 4-0.

After a competitive but scoreless first half in Thompson, the Scorpions, who failed to finalize several shots on goal in the initial thirty-five minutes, started the second half with an early score.

In the 38th minute, center forward Christian Moura passed the ball across the penalty box to Dylan Moreira. His off-the-ball run put him on pace for a first-touch shot across the goal mouth that banked off the inside far post and across the line to make it 1-0.

The Scorpions scored their second goal on a pass from Owen Bull to Moura, who benefitted from a defensive error before taking a near post shot that the goalie could not handle in the 53rd minute.

The third goal came just three minutes later when Bull found Lander Sotil at the far post. Sotil’s inside foot shot passed quickly by the keeper and gave the Scorpions some breathing room.

The final goal came off a corner from Kevin Seymour in the 57th minute. The short corner, with Seymour making a quick pass to Kyle Kegan, gave Kegan time to pinpoint a far post pass to Bull, who one touched the ball into the back of the net without any resistance.

The Scorpions will now face a West Hartford squad that took them to penalty kicks in last season’s quarterfinals. The game will be played in West Hartford on Saturday.
