Babe Ruth: Trumbull 15s alive in state tournament
The Trumbull Babe Ruth 15U baseball team advanced to the state tournament elimination finals with a 7-2 victory over Waterford on Tuesday night.
Trumbull, managed by Jeff John, will look to make it three straight knock-out round victories on Thursday, July 14, when they play Milford at Veteran’s Field in East Lyme. Both teams are 3-1.
East Lyme awaits the winner on Friday at East Lyme High School. First pitch is 7:30 p.m.
Trumbull, the District 2 champs, opened states with a 2-1 win over Stamford on Saturday. East Lyme defeated the locals 12-3 on Sunday. Trumbull bounced back with an 8-1 win over Simsbury on Monday before extending its season versus Waterford.
Trumbull opened the first inning with five consecutive hits to take a 4-0 lead against Waterford.
Beau DeMelo, singled, Tim Seymour bunted his way on base, and Jake Teixeira doubled them home. Evan Warner added an RBI single, went to third on Zack Brace’s hit and scored on a balk.
Waterford scored single runs in the home first and third.
answered with a run on their own in the bottom of the first on a single.
In the fifth, Stephen Ioli made a spectacular play at second base by diving for a hard hit ground ball to his left and firing from his knees. Warner scooped the throw from the dirt to get the out.
Trumbull got on the board three times in the sixth. Teixeira led off with his second double of the game and moved to third on Braces’ third single of the game. Teixeira came home on a balk, Stolba walked scored on Andrew Koch’s double over the third base bag.
In the win over Simsbury, Teixeira had three hits and drove in two runs. Warner had two hits and two RBIs. Stolba and Seymour each had two hits and an RBI. DeMelo (RBI), Ioli (RBI), Brace and Chopskie had hits.
Ioli pitched into the fourth inning to get the win and struck out the side in the second. Koch and Ryan Vawter finished up.
