Babe Ruth 15s edged out by Newtown in states
Justin Waldek’s two-run triple with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Trumbull 15-year-old All Stars their first lead of the game, then one pitch later he scored on Dino DiGirolamo’s single to give Trumbull a 4-2 lead going into the last inning of its Babe Ruth state tournament elimination game with Newtown on July 27.
However, the lead was short lived. With one out, Sam Czel doubled home two runs to tie the game and came around to score on Mason Melillo’s two-out single giving Newtown a 5-4 lead.
Glenn Hellthaler led off the bottom of the seventh for Trumbull with a double and moved to third on a groundout, but Newtown pitcher David Matthews closed the door on Trumbull’s season by striking out the next hitter and getting the last batter to pop out.
Manager Bob Buswell’s 15s finished the season third in the state and had a 20-8 record. Among the team’s season highlights were winning the District II championship and reaching the finals in the prestigious New England 16U College Showcase.
