The Trumbull Babe Ruth 13-year-old All Stars opened state tournament play with a 7-1 victory over Waterford on Thursday.

Danny Ruchalski set the tone from the start by launching a towering triple over the right fielder’s head to lead off the game.

He scored a batter later when Dustin Siqueira grounded out to shortstop.

Trumbull added to its lead when Mike D’Agostino doubled over the center fielder’s head to score a run.

Those were all the runs that Trumbull would need as Nolan Nemchek continued his dominant pitching by throwing a complete game for the win. He scattered seven hits over seven innings, while only allowing one run.

Ruchalski had a triple, a single, two RBIs and two runs scored. Siqueira doubled and had an RBI. Andrew Lojko doubled. Tyler Zikias and D’Agostino both had doubles to knock in runs. Robert Olah added a sacrifice fly, scoring Brandon Bottino.

“We clearly came out of the gates as the aggressor which is always key when your on the road in a state tournament,” manager Mike Buswell said.

“It was very important to set the tone early with this game being played on Waterford’s home field. Danny did great job of driving the ball in his first at bat, which really gave us a lift.

“We played great team baseball tonight. Our pitching and defense has been very good and we will continue to rely on that moving forward.”

Trumbull advances in the winner’s bracket and will face Simsbury tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Veteran’s Field in Niantic. Simsbury was an 8-2 winner over Shelton.
