All-Stars topple Fairfield

The Trumbull Babe Ruth 13 All-Star team saw its run in the District 2 Tournament come to an end with a 6-1 loss to Wilton at Kiwanis Field in Fairfield on Tuesday, July 1. Trumbull opened Districts with a 4-1 win over Fairfield, before dropping decisions to Norwalk and Wilton. Beau Demelo had three hits, including a double, and Stephen Ioli had two hits for Trumbull in the Wilton game. Trumbull scored its run in the bottom of the third. Wilton came back with two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the sixth inning.

In the 8-4 loss to Norwalk on June 25, the game was tied at 1 before Norwalk scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Trumbull made it 7-2 with a run in the fifth and added two more in the seventh. Chaz Stolba and Demelo drove in two runs each.

In the 4-1 win over Fairfield on Friday, June 25, Zack Brace hit a pair of doubles, the first tying the game at 1 in the bottom of the fourth inning and the second knocking in a run during Trumbull’s three-run rally in the sixth.

Jake Teixeira got the start and pitched the first five innings, striking out six batters and allowing three hits. Alex Chopskie pitched the final two frames, allowing only one base runner and striking out one.

Luke Finnegan led off the third with a single for Fairfield, but was erased on a 4-6-3 double play that was started by Kyle Zielinski and turned by Iola to Brace at first base.

Luke Lemy had a two-out single in the second, and Brace and Ryan Vawter drew walks, before Fairfield starter Ryan Dean got a roller to Devin Young at first to retire the side.

Trumbull tied the game at 1 in the fourth when Brace doubled up the gap in right-center with two out to score Teixeira, who had been hit by a pitch.

Teixeira stranded a runner on third base in the top of the fifth, and Trumbull strung together five straight hits with one out to take the lead in the sixth. Ioli had a solid single to left, Evan Warner stayed back on the ball and drove it up the middle for a single, before Chopskie pulled the ball inside the first base bag to score Ioli.

Lamy dropped a single into no man’s land in shallow right field to plate the third run, and then Brace slugged a double to left-center this time to push the lead to 4-1.
