Trumbull Pisces Swimming Association will participate in the Swim Across the Sound, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2. The Swim Marathon consists of individuals and teams up to six swimmers that swim from Port Jefferson, Long Island to Captain’s Cove in Bridgeport. Head coach Bill Strickland estimates the 15.5 mile swim will take six to seven hours. He said, “This is our second year doing the swim and we couldn’t be more excited to challenge ourselves to swim better than last year, but also to raise more money for St. Vincent’s cancer programs.” The team consists of Strickland, assistant coach Chris Fracker, assistant coach Colleen Carroll, Trumbull High and Pisces swimmers Victoria Batchelor, Delaney Walsh and Josh Pavel. Team members swim in relay fashion for the duration of the race and will swim anywhere from two to four miles each. Pavel, a first-time SWIM participant said, “I have wanted to swim in this relay race ever since my mom brought me to watch the swimmers arrive at Captain’s Cove finish line many years ago. “I have also done the Aquathon at Fairfield University a while back in honor of family members who battled cancer. “I am excited to finally Swim Across the Sound as it is a great way to raise awareness and to give back to the community.” New coach and team member Carroll said, “I’m swimming in honor of my cousin Brendan Carroll’s son, Conor, who was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer when he was only a few weeks old and who is now in remission. “It’s a honor to be able to swim and raise money for cancer research so it can help children like Conor to live long, healthy lives.” Strickland said, “This is just another example of how our team has come together to do something for a greater cause. The enthusiasm from the swimmers, the parents, our board and our community has been amazing.” Each team raises money for St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation, which provides cancer education, screening and prevention programs at low- or no-cost for uninsured and underinsured.
