It was a gold medal that was placed around Trumbull local Nicole Kirven’s neck on June 28, at the 2013 YMCA Gymnastics National Championships, held this year in Savannah, Georgia. Kirven scored a 35.375 in the All-Around, taking the gold over 29 other level 7 competitors and placing first in the Floor Exercise event with a 9.4. Kirven was one of 13 female gymnasts from the Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA who attended the championships on June 27 and 28.

“To be the Level 7 YMCA National Champion is a great feeling. I feel that all of my hard work in the gym has paid off, and it also makes me look forward to all I can accomplish in the future,” states Kirven, a 14-year-old incoming sophomore at St. Joseph’s High School. “This competition was more special because of all the new competition that was there and the size of the meet. I am used to competing with most of the same girls in Connecticut, but now with many more states involved, it was exciting to come in and see all the other girls in the nation.”

Callan Vaughn placed 1st on the Balance Beam event with a 9.075.

“I couldn’t be more excited for all our gymnasts who attended the National Competition,” states Andrew Campbell, Youth and Sport Director at the Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA and Head Optional Girls Coach. “Not only did they compete in a National event, but they also participated in an Olympic Day Event during the opening ceremonies.”

The Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA, a branch of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, gymnastics program provides general preschool, school-aged, and competitive programs and camps to children ages 12 months and up.
