The Trumbull High girls cross country team ended its outstanding season when the Eagles ran in the Footlocker Regionals at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx on Nov. 26. Thousands of runners from 11 states in the Northeast gathered to run. With plenty of races from freshman up to senior competitions, the top 15 in each race earned first team honors and 16-30 \u00a0second team recognition. Trumbull received plenty of medals, with Alessandra Zaffina placing 30th in the freshman race (21:38), Margaret LoSchiavo 20th In the sophomore race (21:24), and Sophia Hopwood was 11th (21:24) and Molly Malloy 22rd (22:31) in the senior 5000-meter race. The highlight of the day was the Elite championship race, one of four run in the country, with the top 10 finishers moving on to Nationals. Trumbull\u2019s Kate Romanchick competed in the elite 5000 meter race. She had a solid performance with a 37th-place finish in a time 19:18 (her second fastest run this season). The race went out very fast and Romanchick completed her first mile in under 5:40. The course changed after the mile and upon entering the wooded area the runners were challenged with a hilly up and down terrain. Romanchick excelled on the hills, passing runners as they climbed up the challenging course. Romanchick's strong showing continued at the finish, passing five runners on the straightaway. Her time was good enough to place 4th overall for Connecticut runners, helping the CT team medal with a 5th-place overall finish out of 11 states in the Northeast. The top 5 individual times from each competing state are used to calculate each state's team time. Every Trumbull varsity girl that competed at the Footlocker Regionals left with a medal. The Eagles are now prepping for the indoor season.
