North Branford senior goalie Jake Montanaro stopped 12 Trumbull High shots in the third period and made 27 saves overall when the Thunderbirds held off the Eagles for a 5-4 on Saturday night at The Rinks in Shelton. After pulling goalie Alex Tsymbalyuk (18 saves) for an extra skater late in the game, Trumbull was unable to put a shot on goal in the final 1:06 in losing its second game of the year without a win. The Eagles fell behind early when the T-Birds' Joe Carbone scored 4:11 into the game. They came back to tie it 25 seconds later on a score by Joe Polzello. Trumbull added a first-period goal from John Theriault (9:15) and trailed, 3-2, after one. The Eagles added two more in the second period, on goals from John Guerrera (6:53) and then pulled to within one at 5-4 when Collin Mallozzi beat Montanaro at 11:27. Matt Pederson had two goals and Nick Poulin had a goal and an assist for North Branford (2-1-1). Mallozzi added an assist for Trumbull. "It seemed like each time we scored, we'd give it right back to them," said Trumbull coach Greg Maxey. "Our forecheck was good tonight, and we certainly were aggressive enough in the offensive zone. We simply couldn't come up with any consistent play on defense and that put added pressure on Alex."
