Rich Brereton fired a complete-game four-hitter to propel third-ranked Darien High to a 7-0 win over visiting St. Joseph High of Trumbull on Tuesday afternoon in an FCIAC baseball showdown. The Blue Wave were clinging to a 1-0 edge in the top of the sixth, when Brereton pitched himself into, then out of, danger. Singles by Jake DeLeo and Matt McKernan, sandwiched around a walk to Neil Velasquez, loaded the bases for the Cadets (8-5). Brereton then induced a 3-2 fielder’s choice off the bat of Charlie Pagliarini for the first out. After Brereton got Tom Montelli on an infield fly, Dave Capela grounded out to second base to end the frame. Darien (14-2) then scored six times in bottom of the sixth to break the game open, knocking Cadet freshman southpaw Al Paolozzi out in the process. Singles by Peter Marren and Sean O’Malley started the uprising in the sixth, before Christopher Drake reached on an error. Matthew Drake then laced an RBI single to left, before Justin Jordan plated pair on an opposite-field single to left. Two more runs scored when Brereton reached on an error and Casey Brown provided the exclamation point with a towering RBI double to the right-center field alley. In the fifth inning, Brereton snapped a scoreless deadlock with a double that drove in Jordan with the game-winning run. O’Malley and Jordan had two hits apiece for the Blue Wave, winners of five straight. For St. Joseph, Connor Hurley singled and drew a walk. McKernan, DeLeo and Joe Money added singles for the Cadets. St. Joseph hosts Warde (12-5) tomorrow at 4 p.m., while Darien meets visiting Trinity Catholic (3-12) at 4.
