Wrestling: Six Eagles alive in State Open
Trumbull High has six wrestlers still competing in the State Open Wrestling Tournament in New Haven.
Seventh-seeded Matt Ryan will meet Windham’s second-seeded Julio Flores in the 106-pound quarterfinal on Saturday. Ryan won a 2-0 decision in his first-round bout on Friday.
Tristan Haviland, the No 6 seed at 113 pounds, will wrestle Foran of Milford’s sixth-seeded Gino Esposito in the quarterfinals. Haviland won his first bout by fall in 2:18.
Desmond Washington, the 8 seed in the heavyweight division, will meet No. 1 Luke Edmondson from Foran High in the quarterfinals. Washington advanced with a 5-2 decision on Friday.
Joey Ryan, the fourth seed at 160 pounds, will wrestle Jack St. Onge in the consolation round. Ryan lost his first match by fall and then won his first wrestleback with a pin in :59.
At 126 pounds, No. 16 Mike Mirmina pinned in :58 then lost by fall. His 7-1 decision advanced him to wrestle Demetre Carnot, the No. 5 seed from Maloney on Saturday.
Dante Montanaro, seeded fifth at 138 pounds, lost his first match 9-7 then stayed alive in the consolation round with a pin. He will next wrestle No. 16 seed Joshua Schwartz from Northwestern.
