Simon Whiteman hit a three-run triple in the top of the ninth inning and Trumbull Legion defeated Darien/New Canaan by a score of 7-4 in a Zone 4 baseball game at Darien High on Saturday.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended by heavy rain with Trumbull leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning.

Peter Ruosso pitched two scoreless innings to get the win for Post 141, now 10-4 on the season.

Dino DiGirolamo and Ben McCullough singled to set things up for Trumbull to snap the 4-4 tie in the ninth inning.

A fielder’s choice and a walk to Daniel Mendez loaded the bases for Whiteman, who tripled down the left field line.

DNC (5-7) had tied the game with a two-run rally in the bottom of the seven inning.

Mason Propper singled off starter Brian Hnatuk and Chris Drake walked to put pinch-runner Matt Drake on second.

After a fielder’s choice grounder left runners on the corners, Michael O’Malley and Brandon Abbate had singles, with an outfield error allowing the second run to score.

Trumbull took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with Zach Sagar doubling home Whitman, who had been hit by a pitch and stole a base.

DNC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on Peter Archey’s two-run single that plated Zach Smith (walk) and O’Malley (error).

The combination of Whitman and Sagar tied the game at 2-2 in the third.

Whiteman reached on an infield single and went all the way to third on Justin Waldek’s sacrifice bunt.

Sagar’s fly ball brought him home.

In the sixth, Trumbull took a 4-2 lead.

Sagar doubled and Matt Fasoli walked and both scored when a squeeze bunt attempt led to a pair of errant DNC throws.

Zach Smith, Kyle Levasseur and Archey had two hits each for the home team.
