Veronica Alicea out of Trumbull High was Roger Williams University’s Rookie Athlete of the Year recipient at the Athletics Awards Banquet, celebrating the achievements and accomplishments of RWU student-athletes over the course of the 2012-13 academic year.

Well over 400 student-athletes, family, and staff attended the event in support of the success of RWU athletics on the year.

Alicea was named to the All-Commonwealth Coast Conference softball first team in addition to being named the CCC Rookie of the Year.

She is a two-time CCC Rookie of the Week and currently leads the conference in RBIs with 43 on the season,.

She is fourth in the CCC with a .424 batting average, which is also third-best on the team. In addition, she ranks first among all NCAA Division III players with 137 at-bats and only one strikeout.

Alicea and the Hawks won the 2013 CCC Championship by defeating Endicott on May 4.

Roger Williams earned the bid to the NCAA Tournament tournament via the automatic bid after knocking off top-seeded Endicott for their first CCC title in eleven years.

The Hawks enter the tournament on a seven-game winning streak.
