Lake Waldek drove in two runs and Mark Hirschbeck had an RBI triple when Trumbull Post 41 defeated Danbury, 6-2, in an American Legion first-round state tournament game on Sunday.

No 5. Trumbull (22-6) will host No. 12 Greenwich (19-9) in the second round at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at Trumbull High.

The winner will play No. 4 Cheshire (19-7) in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday to advance to the state final round that begins Saturday, July 26 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 3, at Cubetta Stadium in Stamford.

Stanley Wolpiuk pitched six shutout innings and struck out seven batters. Joe Nemchek pitched the final three innings with three strikeouts.

Simon Whiteman, Tim Keckler each had two of Trumbull’s 11 hits.

Post 141 took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Waldek’s one-out triple was followed by Hirschbeck’s RBI three-bagger, and when the relay throw went out of play, he was awarded home.

In the third, Whiteman singled, stole second, went to third on an infield out and scored on Mat DeRienzo’s base hit.

Trumbull took the score to 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth.

Wolpiuk singled, was sacrificed into scoring position by Matt Fasoli, and came home on Brian Hnatuk’s single.

Whiteman singled and stole second, before Waldek plated both runners with a single to left.

Wolpiuk pitched to three batters in the seventh before Nemchek came on. Two singles, an error and a sacrifice fly accounted for two runs, one earned, in the frame.
