Trumbull steals way to baseball win
Brian Hnatuk pitched a three-hitter and Simon Whiteman had three stolen bases and scored two runs when Trumbull Legion defeated Norwalk, 2-1, at City Hall Field on Tuesday.
Trumbull is now 13-4. Norwalk is 8-8.
Hnatuk gave up only a first-inning run and helped himself with three assists and a pair of putouts.
Norwalk’s Paul Salata (1-2) allowed only two hits and struck out seven.
A single and a pair of walks started things off for Norwalk in its first at bat, before Trumbull turned a 4-6-3 double play.
Dino DiGirolamo fed Whiteman who threw to Ben McCullough at first to complete the twin killing.
That left a runner on third, but Daniel Mendez made a diving catch in left field.
Trumbull took a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning.
Whiteman walked, stole second and third, and scored on Zach Sagar’s sacrifice fly.
Whiteman crossed the plate with the go-ahead run in the sixth.
He singled to right for Trumbull’s first hit of the game and stole second.
Frank Puglia sacrificed him to third, where he scored on an errant pickoff attempt by Norwalk catcher Ryan Evans.
Hnatuk had an infield hit for Trumbull in the seventh.
Trumbull will host Norwalk Wednesday at 5:45 at Trumbull High.
