Trumbull splits games with Stamford
Trumbull Post 141 split a twin bill with Stamford Post 3 on Wednesday.
After dropping a 4-1 decision to Stamford in the opener, Trumbull came back to win the nightcap by the same score.
Trumbull is 19-6 and Stamford is 24-3. Post 141 will host Darien in a makeup game at Trumbull High today at 5:30.
Nikko Arganese allowed only two hits through five innings in the second-game victory, outdueling Stamford’s Randy Polonia.
Joe Nemchek pitched the last two innings, striking out three.
Trumbull scored two runs in each the first and third innings.
Simon Whiteman led off the first with a double to left field.
Following a Luke Waldek walk, Whiteman stole third and Waldek stole second.
On the play, the catcher’s throw to third went into shallow right field for an error. Whiteman scored and Waldek took third.
Mat DeRienzo drove in Waldek with a sacrifice fly to center.
With one out in the third, Whiteman reached on an infield hit and stole second.
Mark Hirshbeck singled to left field to plate Whiteman, before DeRienzo doubled to deep center field to score Hirshbeck.
Stamford scored its run in the fifth on an error, two walks, and a fielder’s choice RBI by Kevin Stone.
In the first game, with Stamford hosting the makeup game, Post 3 scored two in the second and one in each of the third and fourth innings.
Trumbull took a 1-0 lead in the second.
Following two strikeouts, Stanley Wolpiuk singled up the middle. On a hit-and-run, Matt Fasoli singled through the right side to put runners on the corners for Carl Johnson, who singled to center to score Wolpiuk.
