The Trumbull High softball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and Samantha Platz kept Newtown High off the board in the seventh when coach Cary Nadel’s Eagles opened their season with a 10-6 victory over the visiting Nighthawks on Wednesday.

Newtown took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third before Trumbull came back to tie the game in the fourth.

The Hawks went on top again, 6-5 in the top of the fifth.

Taylor Brown went 3-for-3, including a double and a triple, with two runs scored and two RBIs for Trumbull.

The Eagles’ Lea Thompson hit a two-run home run and Jayme Thompson had a double and two RBIs.

Marisa Valenti singled, doubled and scored a run.

Emily Clark had two hits and scored a run and Delilha DeStefano had a double and drove in a run.

Newtown’s Kate Laaaksonen had two doubles, a single, and scored two runs.

Platz finished with six strikeouts.
