Trumbull softball advances to quarterfinals

The Trumbull High softball team won a 3-2 decision over host Middletown High in a Class LL state tournament second-round game on Thursday.

Coach Cary Nadel’s Eagles (17-5), seeded ninth, will visit top-seeded Southington High for a quarterfinal game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Blue Knights, the defending champions, are 21-0 after defeating No. 16 Ridgefield 10-2.

Middletown, the eight seed, finished with a 16-6 record.

Harleigh Kavzegowicz hit a home run and Jayme Thompson drove in Lea Thompson and Hannah Steigler with a single, when Trumbull took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Ally Szabo allowed five hits and one earned run.

Middletown scored in the second and third innings.

Lea Thompson, Lauren Zielinski, Kristen Dutertre and Szabo played well defensively.
