Trumbull defeats Newtown in Babe 15 tourney
Zach Eggers retired the last eight Newtown batters he faced with Trumbull holding onto a one-run lead, after coming in relief of Peter Rousso, who picked up the win, when the local 15-year-old All-Stars posted an 11-10 victory in the Babe Ruth state tournament in Norwalk on Sunday.
Manager Bob Buswell’s team will meet tournament host Norwalk, who Trumbull defeated in a best-of-three series to notch the District II title, in the winner’s bracket final at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brien McMahon High.
Trumbull scored nine runs in the second inning to take a 9-3 lead.
Joe Nemchek had a three-run triple to highlight the rally, while Dino DiGirolamo, Kris DiCocco, Glenn Hellthaler, Jake Benigno and Patrick Lipinski added run-scoring singles. Justin Waldek had an RBI triple in the big inning.
DiGirolamo also had an RBI single in the third inning.
Nemchek finished with two hits and three RBIs, DiGirolamo had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. DiCocco and Hellthaler both had two hits and an RBI.
