Trumbull defeats Foran High to win Trumbull Duals

Trumbull High defeated four opponents in pool play to get to the finals, where coach Charlie Anderson’s Eagles knocked off Foran High 40-33 to capture the Trumbull Duals championship on Saturday.

Trumbull opened match play with a 66-10 win over Notre Dame, topped Amity-Woodbridge 75-6, Mount Pleasant (R.I.) 81 to minus 1 and Manchester 54-28.

In pool play, Joe Palmieri wrestling at 195 pounds and 220 pounds, had four wins, three by fall.

Jonathan Kosak at 126 pounds won three matches by fall.

Matt Ryan at 138 pounds and heavyweight Matthew Ryan won three times each.

Bob DeJesus at 220 pounds won an 11-4 decision versus Notre Dame.

Jason Mercado at 182 pounds won by fall against Amity and Mt. Pleasant.

Jack Ryan at 120 pounds had two pins.

106-pound Michael Longo had pins versus Amity and Manchester.

Travis Longo at 113 pounds won twice.

Will Holmes at 145 pounds had two puns and a 7-0 decision.

David Castaldo at 132 pounds won twice by fall.

At 152 pounds, Webster Williams had a pin versus Amity.

Mike Hegley at 160 pounds also won by fall versus Amity.

The Foran match opened at 132 pounds, where Castaldo scored a 7-1 decision over Jordan Lang.

Matt Ryan pinned Tyler Stanko in 57 seconds to give Trumbull a 9-0 lead.

Holmes earned a 7-2 decision over Ethan Edmondson at 145 to up the lead to 12-0.

Foran won the next four weight classes to go on top, 21-12.

Mike Giordano decisioned Williams, 12-8, K.J. Pokorowski pinned Hegley, Tim Fitzgerald pinned Ben Cousins at 170 and Umer Khan pinned Mercado.

Palmieri put Trumbull back on the board with a 12-3 major decision over Pat Brogan at 195.

The Lions’ Nolan Bannon pinned DeJesus and Pat Rescanski pinned Matthew Ryan to make it 33-16.

The lower weights came through for the Eagles.

At 106, Mike Longo pinned Anthony DiPietro in 2:51, Travis Longo pinned Tanish Joshi in 1:53 of their 113-pound bout and Jack Ryan pinned Kyle Pokornowski in 32 seconds to put Trumbull up 34-33.

Kozak secured the win with a pin in 1:09 over Mark Fitzgerald.
