The Trumbull Post 141 American Legion baseball team defeated Providence Sports and Leadership (R.I.) by a score of 5-1 in the 7th annual Firecracker Invitational Tournament quarterfinals at Dean College in Franklin Mass. on Saturday.

Manager Brett Conners team improved to 4-0 in the tourney and will play Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) in Sunday’s semifinal.

Stanley Wolpiuk pitched a three-hitter and struck out six batters in the complete game win over Providence.

Simon Whiteman and Zach Sagar had two hits each for Trumbull, which scored single runs in  each of the third and sixth innings before taking a 5-0 lead into the home seventh.

Whiteman led off  the third with a bunt single between the pitcher and third base and went to second on a throwing error. He stole third and scored on Mark Hirschbeck’s RBI grounder.

In the sixth, Sagar walked and stole second. He went to third on Matt Fasoli’s groundout and Tim Keckler singled him home with one of Trumbull’s eight hits.

Trumbull scored three runs in the seventh. Whiteman singled, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Luke Waldek had an RBI single, before Hirschbeck singled and Mat DeRienzo was hit by a pitch to load the bases.’

Sagar singled to plate Waldek to make it 4-0 and Hirschbeck scored on Fasoli’s sacrifice fly.
