Starting now through November, expect to see the Trumbull High girls cross country team running around Trumbull as it trains for the fall season.

In the short span of six years with Jim McCaffrey as head coach, the team has grown from 16 to more than 70 girls athletes.

With the addition of the middle school cross country programs headed by Christine Kania at Hillcrest and John Mastrianni at Madison, it is no coincidence that cross country continues to gain popularity.

This year, the Eagles welcome back Dennis McLaughlin for his third year with the team, as well as this season’s captains: Colby Laracuente, Kate Romanchick and Victoria Estacio.

The team’s motto is Hands In, a reminder to everyone that in order for the team to succeed, each runner must commit 100 percent.

The team held captain’s practices three times a week during the summer. This allowed for girls to get together and motivate each other through a workout.

The 2016 season holds many exciting dates for the team. Its first home meet is Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. at the back fields of Trumbull High School. Then comes the Wilton Invitational, the Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island, regular season meets, and FCIACs.

In addition to competitions, the Eagles are volunteering at the annual Pumpkin Run and will hold a bake sale to fundraise for the season.
