The Trumbull Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star team defeated Waterford, 4-3, in the first round of the state tournament at Brien McMahon High in Norwalk on Saturday.

Manager Bob Buswell’s team will play Newtown today at 5 p.m. in a winner’s bracket semifinal at McMahon.

Joe Nemchek no-hit Waterford for seven innings, striking out seven, but it wasn’t enough as an unearned run in the sixth tied the score at 2 for Waterford.

Trailing by a run going into the bottom of the ninth, Trumbull’s Patrick Lipinski opened the inning with a hit.

After a stolen base, Nemchek singled home Lipinski and advanced to second on the throw.

Dino DiGirolamo followed with a single down the left field line to plate Nemchek with the winning run.

Danny Keckler picked up the win with two innings of relief.

Nemchek had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Lipinski  had two hits and scored two runs and DiGirolamo had three hits. Justin Waldek hit a triple.
