Tinker, Vecchione, Seuch close season at steeplechase
In the final meet of the outdoor track season, a trio of Trumbull High School runners competed at the CIAC state steeplechase championships Tuesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
There are two steeplechase races — a 3000 meter competition and one at 2000 meters.
The Eagle runners ran in the 2000 meter race.
Senior Jack Tinker placed fourth overall with a time of 7:05, just short of his school record set in April.
Senior captain Mitch Vecchione placed seventh overall with a strong second half of the race to finish with a time of 7:12.
Rounding out the Trumbull effort was sophomore Matthew Seuch, running his first ever steeplechase. Seuch ran 7:14 to place eighth overall.
A total of 41 entrants from around the state competed in the event, which was won by Nonnewaug High’s Dylan Geissinger-Tuttle (6:43.86).
"It was a great way to end a successful spring track season" said coach Jeff Klein. "All three of these runners stayed to train for the last three weeks for the event and their hard work paid off today.
"Mitch and Jack were running their final races for THS, having competed for the last four years in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. They have steadily improved and it was especially nice to see them both leave us on a high note.”
