St. Joseph harriers host state's best

The St. Joseph High boys cross country team dropped its regular-season finale on Oct. 7, to Staples of Westport. The four-team meet featured three of the state’s top ranked teams (#2 Darien, #4 Staples, #6 Danbury). Staples edged previously unbeaten Darien for the regular-season FCIAC title.

Junior James Mas placed seventh overall in 16 minutes, 25 seconds for the Cadets.

Junior Nick Zannis placed 30th in 18:03, while seniors Will Gallagher (31st, 18:06) and Kyle O’Brien (34th, 18:26) rounded out the top Cadet finishers.

Overall race winner Alex Ostberg of Darien set a new course-record of 15:26.

“This was the most competitive home meet we’ve ever hosted in my 15 years here,” said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. “To host three of the top teams in the state in the same meet, including two undefeated teams... Made for a very competitive race.”

Senior Evan Aldo placed 40th in 18:41 and freshman Ryan Haack placed 69th in 19:49.

Freshman Brian Dineen placed 87th in 20:42 and senior Jack Guman placed 91st in 21:00.

Junior Jacob Russell (92nd, 21:00), freshman Michael Pleszko (95th, 21:06) and junior Nick Maltese (101st, 21:34) also competed for St. Joseph.

Additional finishers for the Cadets, which finished the regular-reason at 8-10, included: sophomore Nicholas Russo (112nd, 23:07), freshman Mark Kendziorski (116th, 24:09), freshman Liam Callahan (117th, 24:21) and freshman Daniel Marchetti (24:29).

Sophomore Camren Menefee placed 120th in 25:58, while freshman Anthony Crocco placed 121st (26:00) and Kevin Frattaroli placed 122nd (26:10).

St. Joseph competes in the Wickham Invitational on Saturday in East Hartford. The Cadets will head to Waveny Park in New Canaan next Thursday for the FCIAC championships.
