St. Joseph girls capture Class M basketball championship
The St. Joseph Cadets have claimed the 2015 CIAC Class M girls basketball championship with an 50-44 victory over the Cromwell Panthers in the final Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The 11th-seeded Cadets, who were making their first appearance in the state finals since 1979, took control of the game with a 20-10 second quarter and then held off a Panthers’ rally in the second half to get the victory.
Head coach Chris Lindwall’s Cadets finished the season with a record of 19-7, while fourth-seeded Cromwell ended at 21-4.
The Panthers’ last lead came late in the first quarter at 6-5, but St. Joseph closed that frame with a 5-0 run, including a three-pointer by Bridget Sharnick, to take an 11-6 lead after one.
The Cadets then dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers, 20-10, to go up by 15 at 31-16 at halftime.
A 12-3 run in the third quarter helped Cromwell close the gap to six points heading into the fourth, but the Cadets held the Panthers off down the stretch to get the win.
Jacqueline Jozefick had a double-double for St. Joseph, racking up 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Bridget Sharnick was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points, while also bringing in eight rebounds.
Caitlin Sharnick had eight points and eight rebounds, and Shannon O’Meara added six points.
For Cromwell, Mya Villard had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, Emma Belcourt had 16 points and five rebounds, and Nicole Rojas had 13 points and six rebounds.
