St. Joseph defeats Ledyard to win football title

St. Joseph defeated Ledyard High, 37-7, to win the Class M-Small Division state championship at Veterans Memorial Stadium in New Britain on Saturday.

Coach Joe Della Vecchia’s second-seeded Cadets finished the season 11-2. Top-seeded Ledyard closed out at 12-1.

St. Joseph took a 21-7 lead into the half on touchdowns by Mufasha Abdul Basir (91-yard run and 31-yard run) and Lars Pedersen (a 31-yard touchdown pass from Cory Babineau). Marc Mrozek was perfect on three conversion kicks.

Ledyard cut into a 21-0 deficit on Ty Ebdon’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Josiah Schumaker with 1:20 left in the half.

Ledyard had two chances to draw closer, but gave the ball up on downs at the St. Joseph 14- and 24-yard lines on its first two series of the third quarter.

Mrozek’s 28-yard field goal at 10:09 of the fourth quarter made the score 24-7, after Matt Laveneziana recovered a fumbled punt.

Pedersen scored on a 3-yard run at 5:42 of the final period and Mrozek returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown at the 4:14 mark.
