St. Joseph completes summer season
The St. Joseph High girls basketball team can only hope that its 2013-14 season plays out the way the Cadets ended their Summer League campaign in Stratford on Aug. 22.
St. Joseph took a 14-0 lead and never took a step back in defeating Shelton, 61-17.
Anna DeCarmo ran the point, dished out a handful of assists and tossed in six points.
Maite Gritsko had 13 points and Emily Robertson six, with both showing the ability to spot up and shoot or score off the dribble.
Bridget Sharnick was a catalyst at both ends of the court. Her defensive presence and rebounding slowed Shelton, and offensively her all-around game led to a 16-point performance.
Katie Gardella used the summer to improve her foot skills, and the rising junior scored 13 points and led the team in hitting the floor for loose balls.
Caitlin Sharnick and Tara Whiting both made long-range shots and doubled up on Shelton ballhandlers to help force turnovers.
Robertson and Gritsko alternated baskets, before Gardella tallied inside and Caitlin Sharnick took a pass from DeCarmo and nailed a 3-pointer for an 11-0 lead.
Bridget Sharnick caught a pass from her sister and turned it in to a three-point play, before Shelton’s Nicole Roberts put Shelton on the scoreboard.
With the Cadet defense forcing an uptempo that caught Shelton wanting, Bridget Sharnick scored consecutive baskets off assists from Robertson and Gritsko, respectively.
Shelton scored on two straight possessions, but Gritsko buried a trey, Gardella was fouled and made both free throws, and Bridget Sharnick went baseline for another hoop to give St. Joseph a 24-7 halftime lead.
Gritsko and Whiting unloaded shots from beyond the arc to stop a mini Shelton rally, as the second half got underway.
Caitlin Sharnick then drove the lane and her bucket began a 24-0 run that featured all that St. Joseph had to offer.
Gardella split the defense for a hoop and Gritsko went around a Whiting screen and hit a long-range jumper, before DeCarmo took the fifth pass of their next possession and scored from the wing.
Rebounds from Gardella and Caitlin Sharnick led to transition baskets from Bridget Sharnick and Gritsko and St. Joseph was ahead 45-11.
Gardella ran the floor, and as the trailer on a fastbreak had a three-point play. She scored again as a cutter with Bridget Sharnick earning the assist.
DeCarmo scored on consecutive trips down court, Bridget Sharnick’s one-touch pass to Gardella led to another hoop, and then she stepped outside and completed the tour de force victory with a 3-pointer of her own.
