Softball: Trumbull High defeats Brien McMahon, 13-2
Trumbull High took a 4-0 lead over visiting McMahon, doubled its advantage in the second frame, and cruised to a 13-2 FCIAC softball win on Wednesday.
Coach Jacqui Sheftz’ Eagles improved to 12-4. McMahon is 0-14.
Lea Thompson singled home Marisa Valenti, who had doubled, to give Trumbull the lead.
After Erica Fluskey hit a single, Taylor Brown ripped a double up the gap in right-center field to take the score to 3-0. She scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles rallied to score four times with two outs in the second.
Valenti forced Lauren Zielinski, who had singled, for the second out.
Valenti stole second, went to third when the throw was off the bag, and scored on Thompson’s infield hit.
Fluskey singled, Brown walked and Briana Giacobbe cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Ally Szabo pitched the first two innings for Trumbull, striking out three and walking one.
Valenti came on to throw in the third and stranded two runners that had walked.
In the McMahon fourth, the Senators scored twice.
MacKenzie Stamp and Danielle Bonis worked out walks on 3-2 counts and Tatanna Molina singled home a run.
Kat Downey’s fielder’s choice grounder brought the second run across the plate.
Trumbull got those two runs back in the home fourth.
Thompson hit a one-hop triple to the fence in right and scored on Fluskey’s double.
Brown hit a fly ball out down the right field line, Fluskey never stopped running, and scored on the two-base sacrifice fly.
Valenti used her drop pitch and changed speeds to strand four runners in the final three innings. She struck out eight.
Trumbull capped the scoring with a three-run rally in the fifth.
Jill O’Connell, who had been robbed of two hits by centerfielder Stephanie Mangels, took no chances in her third at-bat, banging out a triple.
Kristen Dutertre doubled her home.
After Sarah Angelo singled, Zielinski singled home Dutertre.
Fluskey’s two-out infield hit made it 13-2.
