REDDING — Emily Gell struck out 11 batters when Trumbull High defeated Joel Barlow, 9-0, on Tuesday.

“Joel Barlow was our lone regular season loss last year, 2-1 at home early in the season,” said coach Jacqui Sheftz after her Eagles improved to 3-0. "Today, our girls executed to near perfection, all facets of the game. Our timely hitting, base running, defense and pitching were clicking on all cylinders.”

Mackenzie Bruggeman was 3-for-4, including a solo home run in the second and a two-run double in the sixth.

Freshman Jenna Duffy had three hits and three RBIs.

Cassi Barbato had a double.

Abby Ota and Rebecca Mauro each had two hits for the Falcons (1-1). Teresa Galbon had a double.

Ota had hits in the first and sixth innings.

Mauro had a single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth, and a line drive down third base in the bottom of the sixth.

Galbon had a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth, but was thrown out trying to advance to third.

“If the girls thought our coaching staff's expectations of them were high to begin with, after today's performance, it's time to set them even higher,” Sheftz said.

The Eagles host Stamford on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
