The St. Joseph softball team opened Class M state tournament play with a 2-0 victory over Waterford High in Trumbull on Wednesday.
Coach Jeff Babineau’s Cadets, after a bye in the first round, scored a run in the third and sixth innings against the 16th-seeded Wildcats (15-7).
St. Joseph will host No. 8 Griswold in the quarterfinals on Thursday at a time to be determined.
Nicole Williams allowed only one hit and struck out 13. She had a sacrifice fly to plate a run.
Hanna Hutchison had two of the Cadets’ seven hits, drove in a run, and scored a run.
Jovanna Hillman also had two hits.
