Seniors honored for commitment to sport

A large crowd was on hand when the Trumbull High wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with a 72-8 victory over Brien McMahon of Norwalk on Feb. 6.

Honored before the match were both senior grapplers and senior team managers.

Fans in attendance realize the dedication of body and soul that wrestlers put in every day, how they must push themselves to the limit.

No one drew a louder ovation that Luie Gomes, who was born with cerebral palsy, and after three years as a team manager, took on the challenge of wearing the singlet and competing.

After all, wrestlers are all ultimately measured by the heart that beats within.

Gomes has been accepted to attend Southern Connecticut State University, but has hopes of receiving that all-important letter from Springfield College.

Gomes, Ray Young Jr., Jordan Pabellon, Andrew Marino, Mohammed Othman, Connor Sollenberger and Kevin Cecio were wrestlers feted.

Jess Aloi, Erika Nagy, Danny Kenny, Paige Haviland, Yara Obied, Cindy Zheng and Alexa Ruff were the senior managers.

Aloi, the Senior Class president, has been with the team four years and is one of three head managers.

Cecio, a four-year team member and three-year varsity starter, is a tri-captain, an All-State Academic team choice, and the 138-pounder placed fourth in Class LL as a junior.

Nady has been with the Eagles as a manager for three seasons, while Haviland, Zheng, Obied and Ruff are two-year veterans.

Ray Young Jr. and Pabellon share duties in the heavyweight division, and are both two-year standouts.

Kenny has been a manager for four years, and works as a timekeeper as well. He is moving on to work with the Trumbull Elite Program.

Marino, was second in FCIAC and third in Class LL as a sophomore. A team tri-captain, he wrestles at 220 pounds.

Mohammed Othman is a four-year wrestler, enjoying an outstanding year at 170 pounds.

Connor Sollenberger, a tri-captain with two year’s varsity experience, has posted big numbers this season at 195 pounds. He was honorable mention All-FCIAC as a junior.
