Santos pitches two-hitter, Trumbull wins 8-0

Avery Santos pitched a complete-game two-hitter and the Trumbull High batters slugged out 12 hits when coach Phil Pacelli’s Eagles opened their season with an 8-0 victory over visiting Masuk of Monroe on Wednesday.

Santos, a right-hander, allowed only singles in the third and fourth innings. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Trumbull took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, after Jake Levison doubled and Colin Keyes singled him home.

The Eagles scored two more in the third.

Liam Moore opened the rally with a one-out double and he scored when Levison ripped a one-hopper off the fence in left field for an RBI triple. He scored on Keyes’ single.

The Eagles built a run in the fourth to go up 3-0. Mat DeRienzo doubled, Zach Sagar hit behind him to get him to third, where Matt Fasoli plated him with a sacrifice fly to deep center.

Trumbull made it 6-0 in the fifth with some heads-up base-running.

Connor Broderick led off with a single and Moore and Levison worked Masuk starter Chris Rubis for consecutive walks to load the bases.

Keyes hit into a 6-4-3 double play, but both Broderick and Moore hustled home to score.

Sagar and Fasoli opened the home sixth with singles off relief pitcher Cameron Kovachik.

They advanced a base when Masuk’s Anthony Amoroso robbed Chris Masi of a base hit.

Broderick drove them both in with a single to center.

Trumbull will be home to Bunnell of Stratford Tghursday at 3:30.
