Trumbull High’s Kate Romanchick placed second overall at the Wickham Invitational's seeded varsity girls 5000-meter cross country race on Monday at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Romanchick ran a strong race on the Class LL and State Open course, finishing in a time of 20:06. The Eagles competed against 31 teams from C.T., R.I. and Mass.

Romanchick sprinted to the front of the group at the start of the race. She ran with a pack of five for the first mile and then took advantage of a downhill to get into second position and was able to hold her place going up the notorious green monster and finished six seconds in front of the next competitor.

Trumbull finished 18th out of 31 teams. The race was a good opportunity for the girls to get a feel for the course prior to the XC LL championship competition on Oct. 31.

The top 5 overall finishers are as follows. 1. Samantha Drop 19:23 Coginchaug, 2. Romanchick 20:06 Trumbull, 3. Una Treanor 20:12 Smithfield Senior HS, 4. Allie Alsup 20:14 Coginchaug, 5. Kiley Rodrigues 20:16 Derby.

The top 5 finishers from Trumbull 2. Romanchick 20:06, 62. Kaley Fasoli 22:05. 124. Victoria Estacio 23:28, 130. Haley Mocker 23:35.and 138. Valerie Mingrone 23:50.

Other highlights included freshman Margaret Loschiavo finished 17th out of 138 runners in the girls freshman 4000 meter run.
