Romanchick, Taubl advance to State Open
Trumbull High’s girls and boys cross country teams sent its top seven runners to compete at the Class LL divisional championships at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 31.
The top two girls and boys team in each of the six classes. in addition to the top 12 individual finishers (plus the top 30 best times), move on to race at this weekend’s State Open.
Kate Romanchick and Charlie Taubl led the Eagles on an unseasonably cold day over the hilly and challenging 5K.
Romanchick completed the course in a time of 20:01 placing 12th overall, earning All-State and automatically advancing to the Open.
Taubl had a solid finish with a time of 17:03, 34th overall qualifying him for Opens. Taubl's time is tied for the second ever fastest time by a THS runner at Wickham.
On the girls side, freshman Margaret Loschiavo finished second for the team and 72nd overall in a time of 22:14, with Kaley Fasoli on her heels finishing third for the team (75th overall) in a time of 22:15.
Other THS finishers include Jilian Ryan 97th, 23.02, Valerie Mingrone 103rd, 23.10, Victoria Estracio 110th, 23.20 and Haley Moker 123rd, 24.13. The girls placed 13th out of 21 teams out pointing Shelton, Manchester, Norwich Free Academy, Hamden, Danbury, Stamford, William Hall and Norwalk.
The boys had cause for celebration with strong performances from everyone on the team. Chris Alegi ran one of the fastest times of any freshman in the race. Mitch Vecchione improved his time over last year by 40 seconds and Jake Cappello ran his personal best.
Alegi finished second for the team and 62nd overall in a time of 17:30. Vechhione and Cappello placed third and fourth for the team (64th and 65th overall) both clocking in at 17:35.
Also representing the team were Jonathan Tinker, who improved 72 seconds over last year’s time and placed 107th in 18:19. Taylor Auten improved 40 seconds (119th, 18:33) and Trevor Rochelle ran an 18:46 (128th). The boys placed 13th out of 24 teams and 22nd out all the classes’ 148 teams.
In addition to these accomplishments the teams combined time of 128:02 was the fastest time ever run by the Eagles on the Wickham course, breaking the old record of 129:01 set in 2011.
