Postseason berths beckon local cagers

The St. Joseph High boys basketball team completed its season-long come back and qualified for the state tournament with a 73-67 victory over Trinity Catholic of Stamford on Saturday.

Coach Chris Watts’ Cadets improved to 9-8 overall and 8-7 in the FCIAC on Monday with a 62-51 win over New Canaan.

Jon Dzurenda and Arkel Ager scored 13 points each. Joe Mangamelli scored 10 points and Erick Langston nine.

The Cadets topped Trinity Catholic behind Ager (28 points), Dzurenda (21 points), Langston (11 points) and Mangamelli (nine points).

St. Joseph defeated Staples of Westport, 78-53, on Feb. 11. Dzurenda scored 19 points, Ager 13, Raekwon Reid and Langston nine each, Mangamelli eight, Mike Sulik seven, Jordan Vazzano six and Omar Telfer five.

Eagles boys hoop

Rashard Rodriguez scored 37 points to lead Trumbull High to a 76-63 victory over Fairfield Warde on Monday.

With the win, coach Buddy Bray’s Eagles improved to 7-10 on the season. Trumbull needs one win in its last three games to qualify for the state tournament.

The Eagles took a 19-7 lead on Warde in the first quarter and played the rest of the way losing only one-point off its lead.

Matt Turner scored 16 points with four assists. Eddie McElroy had eight points and Rodruguez 12 rebounds.

Trumbull lost a 72-44 decision to Stamford High on Feb. 15, as the Black Knights improved to 11-4. Rodriguez scored 22 points and Turner 11.

Amanda Pfohl and Kalisse Eldridge scored 13 points each when Trumbull High upended Fairfield Warde, 67-40, on Monday.

Rachel Carron scored eight points, Joyce Woolen seven and Dani McGillicuddy and Claudia Tucci divided 10 points.

Coach Steve Tobitsch’s Eagles are 13-6 and 12-5 in the FCIAC. Warde is 15-4.

Trumbull defeated Stamford High, 65-55, on Saturday. Pfohl scored 25 points, Woolen 13 points and Eldridge 12.

Trumbull defeated Norwalk High, 43-32, on Feb. 11. Carron scored 13 points. Pfohl and Eldridge had 10 points each.

Dominating the backboard behind Jackie Jozefick and Bridget Sharnick, St. Joseph High defeated New Canaan High, 49-25, on Monday.

Jozefick had 13 boards to go with four blocked shots and 10 points, as coach Chris Lindwall’s Cadets improved to 12-7 overall and 10-7 in the FCIAC.

Sharnick scored 12 points, with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Maite Gritsko scored 10 points and Caitlin Sharnick seven.

In a 43-33 win over Staples of Westport on Feb. 11, Bridget Sharnick scored 15 points, and Shannon O’Meara, Jozefick and Gritsko scored six points each.
