Manager Brett Conners’ Trumbull High Post 141 American Legion baseball team won a three-game series with Zone IV rival Westprt this week.

Trumbull improved to 5-2 by winning twice, while Westport (5-4) salvaged the third game with a 4-3 decision.

Stanley Wolpiuk pitched a complete game to earn the 2-1 victory in the series opener on June 17.

Matt Baccaro pitched five innings, before Tim Kecker and Joe Nemchek came on relief in Trumbull’s 8-5 victory on June 18. Nemchek got the win.

Five of Post 141’s first six batters reached on walks in the second game to build a 2-0 lead.

Trumbull made it 3-1 when Keckler and Hirschbeck singled and Luke Waldek plated the run with a sacrifice fly.

With two outs in the fourth, Hirschbeck singled and scored on Waldek’s triple. Zach Sagar singled Waldek home to push the lead to 5-2.

Westport tied the game in the top of the sixth with a single, two doubles, a walk and hit batter.

In the bottom of the frame, Nemchek reached on an error. A pair of one-out fielder’s choice grounders by Waldek and Sager brought Nemchek home.

Mat DeRienzo’s two-run double put Trumbull up for good, 8-5.

On Thursday, June 19, Westport took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the Trumbull fourth, Keckler drew a two-out walk, Brian Hnatuk was hit by a pitch, Simon Whiteman walked and Hirschbeck drilled his second double of the game, this one good for three RBIs to tie the game at 3.

Westport’s Brian Terzian led off the home sixth with a home run.

Nikko Arganese took the loss despite allowing only four hits in a complete-game performance.

Post 141 will host Bridgeport on Saturday in a doubleheader with games at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Trumbull High.

Trumbull will play meet Bridgeport in the third game of the series on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Seaside Park Field #1.
