Trumbull American Legion Post 141 returned from the Firecracker Invitational in Massachusetts and defeated Darien, 5-3, on Monday, July 7.

Joe Nemchek was the winning pitcher, going six innings with six strikeouts. He allowed only one earned run.

Darien scored two unearned runs in the first before Trumbull took a 3-2 lead in the third.

With one out, Jeff Hage drew a walk and Simon Whiteman bunted toward third base for a single.

Luke Waldek drove home Hage with a single to left, and an error on the play gave Waldek and Whiteman an extra base.

Mark Hirshbeck plated Whiteman with a single to left and Waldek scored on another misplay.

Zach Sagar singled over second base, but a 5-4-3 double play ended inning.

Darien tied the game in the bottom of the third with a single, a stolen base and an RBI single.

Trumbull went back in front in the fourth.

Stanley Wolpiuk singled through the right side and stole second base. Tim Keckler bunted him to third, where Wolpiuk scored on wild pitch.

With two outs in the sixth, Keckler singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carl Johnson singled him home.
