Play 4 a Cause game to raise funds for Fairfield Ludlowe chapter of buildOn

Fairfield Ludlowe and Trumbull High School Softball players and families:

Thank you for participating in Ludlowe Softball’s third annual Play 4 a Cause game. Each year we pick a charity that is bigger than ourselves. Last year, we raised money for Royal Family Kids’ Camp which sends foster children in the D.C.F. system to summer camp. The year before, we contributed to the 900 Project which raised money to build over 900 latrines in Haiti.

This year we will be raising funds and awareness for buildOn. In 1991, Jim Ziolkowski founded this Stamford, Connecticut-based non-profit organization that focuses on both domestic after-school programs and building schools in developing countries. The organization is currently working in seven countries overseas: Haiti, Nicaragua, Senegal, Malawi, Nepal, Burkina Faso, and Mali. They have built over 853 schools so far in these seven countries.

The game on Monday, April 18 will raise money for the Fairfield Ludlowe Chapter of buildOn. A ceremony will be held at 3:45 p.m., right before the game at 4 p.m. This chapter, founded in 2015, has raised more than $30,000 so far. A delegation of nine students will travel to Nicaragua this June to help construct the school with members of the village’s community.

This location was selected for various reasons. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America after Haiti. In addition, 68% of Nicaraguans survive on less than a dollar per day. Further, the average Nicaraguan only has 4.6 years of schooling.

Besides funding the construction of the school, the money raised by the chapter will also fund the expenses of running the school like hiring teachers. As a female sport, we appreciate that at least 50% of the students must be female at the newly built school.

Fairfield Ludlowe players are encouraged to raise at least $25 toward this cause. We thank Trumbull for playing in this game and donations are welcome but not required. Two Ludlowe Softball Falcons, Junior Megan Szchuman and Coach Anna Newberg, will be attending this year’s trip to Nicaragua.
