New Canaan defeats St. Joseph, 41-14
The St. Joseph High football team lost to New Canaan High, 41-14, in an FCIAC showdown between two of the state’s top-ranked teams in Trumbull on Saturday.
Frank Cognetta rushed for 200 yards on 35 carries and a pair of touchdowns for the third-ranked Rams, who improved to 7-0.
St. Joseph, ranked sixth, is 6-2. Lars Pedersen threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Battista on St. Joseph’s second possession of the third quarter to cut the Cadet deficit to 28-6.
Pedersen then ran for an 18-yard touchdown two series’ later. Kevin Trefz’ two-point conversion pass to Mufasha Abdul Basir brought the score to 28-14 with 1:59 remaining to play in the third quarter.
New Canaan made it 34-15 on a Mike Collins’ 45-yard touchdown pass at the 8:03 mark of the fourth period and Cognetta broke off a 31-yard scoring run with 6:45 remaining in the game
