Kingsmen capture league crown in overtime thriller
The Christian Heritage School of Trumbull’s girls soccer team captured the Housatonic Valley Athletic League title with a 2-1 overtime victory over Watkinson School on Saturday, Nov. 8.
It was the third year in a row that CHS has been in the championship game, but the first time it has brought home the coveted trophy.
The Kingsmen went down 1-0 late in the first half on a goal by Watkinson’s Meaghan Byrne. CHS carried much of the play, but couldn’t find the back of the net despite repeated and long sustained attacks.
It wasn’t until the the 69th minute that Lizzy Barna was able to get a cross off from the left side that found Lindsey Augustin, who was able to tuck the ball inside the far post for her first goal of the game.
Soph Luft was able to keep the game level with a few key saves as time wound down.
Tied at 1, the game moved to overtime and Augustin was able to hold off two defenders to finish a breakaway in the first OT to give CHS the win.
CHS now wait to hear whether or not it will be invited to play in the New England Tournament, which features the top 8 Prep School teams in New England in their class.
