Former St. Joseph star Jenn Vazquez has taken Manhattan College by storm this spring, as she’s slugged her way to a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week honors as a member of the Jaspers’ softball team.

Vazquez belted two home runs in the second game of a doubleheader sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, March 27, giving her four round-trippers and 13 RBIs in 21 games.

She has 19 hits in 54 at-bats for a team-best .352 batting average, and is slugging .630 with a .426 on-base percentage.

A freshman catcher/first baseman, Vazquez was recently named the MAAC Rookie of the Week in consecutive weeks.

The first award came for the week ending March 16, when the Jaspers played six games and Vazquez hit at a .353 clip. She had at least one hit in each of the five games she started that week, and went 2-for-4 with her first career home run, a three-run blast, against Hartford on March 11.

Four days later Vazquez doubled and scored twice against Brown in the Capital Classic.

Vazquez earned the Rookie of the Week honors a second straight time when she led Manhattan  with a .438 batting average over six games from March 18-22.

She was 1-for-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at St. John’s on Thursday, March 20, and followed that with a 2-for-3 showing, including a two-run double, in the nightcap.

During a three-game set versus LIU on March 20-21, she singled in the opener and then had three hits in a doubleheader the next day. She singled and hit a two-run double as part of the Jaspers’ six-run fifth inning in the first game of the twinbill, and then belted her second HR of the year in game two.

Manhattan is 7-14 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC.

Vazquez, a Fairfield resident, is a member of the St. Joseph High School Class of 2013 and was an All-State and All-FCIAC performer with the Cadets for three years. She holds SJHS career records in HRs (19) and RBIs (97).
