The St. Joseph boys cross country team placed fifth overall in the 15-team Varsity-2 race Saturday at the Windham Invitational in Willimantic.

The Cadets were led by junior James Mas, who placed second overall in 16 minutes, 37 seconds.

Junior Nick Zannis placed seventh overall in 17:23, while seniors Will Gallagher (30th, 18:27) and Kyle O’Brien (31st, 18:33) both had strong finishes for St. Joseph.

The Cadets also received strong performances from freshman Ryan Haack (64th, 20:05), senior Jack Guman (77th, 20:46) and sophomore Dylan DeMoura (85th, 22:36).

“We had a lot of strong performances today,” said St. Joseph coach David Scrivines. “Four or five of our runners set their personal records, which is always a good thing.”

In the junior varsity race, freshman Brian Dineen placed 93th overall in 20:51. Freshman Michael Pleszko placed 107th in 21:00 and junior Nick Maltese placed 189th in 22:35. Sophomore Matt Conway and junior Jaudens Florian both competed for the Cadets as well.

In the 2.1-mile freshman race, Daniel Marchetti placed 124th in 16:28, while Mark Kendziorski placed 125th in 16:34 and Anthony Crocco placed 150th in 17:26.

“We’ve traditionally performed well at the Windham Invitational,” said Scrivines.  “It was a good early-season meet for us to gauge where we our, especially against similar sized schools that we may see in the state meet.”

St. Joseph returns to conference action today with a five-team meet at Fairfield Warde.
